2026: An Incredible, Terrible, Horrible, and (I Hope) Wonderful Year

Dear  Joanie, Rafe, and Luca,      Today, as I begin once more the letters to you, my grand- and great-grandchildren, we are three months ...

We are Vaccinated! You Have Two Teeth!

Here we are! We are doing quite well after our second Pfizer vaccine. I had to spend a couple of days in bed; your great-grandfather had, as usual, no side effects.  We now have hopes that we will get to meet you, perhaps in a matter of months. Who knows?

In other news...

We are having a cold, cold weekend. It's now about 10am, and the temperature is 1 degree. It's supposed to be -12 tonight. We stay warm in this little house; if you look closely, you can see the fire in our wood stove.  Shelby the poodle, however is not so happy about the cold. I avoid making eye contact with her; she looks at me with longing eyes as if I'm the one responsible for all of this.

More and more people are getting their vaccinations for COVID-19, and we are seeing a drop in both the number of cases and the number of deaths. But we are warned to remain very cautious. Even though we have both been vaccinated, we continue to wear masks, wash our hands, and stay away from crowds.

Also--this has been the week for the Trump impeachment trial in the Senate. It has at times been horrific to watch the videos of our capitol building and the people in it under attack.  We thought that today, February 13, would mark the end of the hearings, with Trump being acquitted because most Republicans want that to be the case. Not that they think he's not guilty of inciting a riot, because they know he is, but because they're afraid of him or their constituents. Self-interest has taken the place of service to country for many men and women in Congress. In 17 years, when you are eligible to vote, what will our country look like, I wonder. I am hopeful that there will be a grand correction toward sustaining our democracy as we face the sobering fact of how close we came to losing it on January 6, with mobs storming the building, several of home we shouting "Kill!"

In our personal lives, it looks as if we'll need to be moving into Boulder before long, perhaps in the fall. Dougie is no longer driving, and we're told that his eyesight difficulty is a brain issue; his eye reflexes are slow and that's what's causing the vision problems. His eyes themselves are fine. His balance is not good, and he's had another fall--no injuries. We love our little mountain home, so we hope to keep it. We both understand that changes are in store for us as we age as gracefully and healthily as we can.

And you! We have videos of you gurgling and talking with your two bottom teeth showing as you offer the camera a big smile.  You are absolutely engaged with the world around you. We look forward to our weekly and sometimes daily pictures.

    Sending all our love!

  1. These are the best photos! I love to hear that *anyone!* has been vaccinated, but especially my grandparents! I read that today (March 7) there were more vaccines given than new cases of covid for the first time since the beginning of this plague - so hopeful!

    xox.
